A painful experience

Article Abstract:

Research has shown that the way children are dealt with in hospital accident and emergency (A&E) departments can do much to relieve their pain and distress. Children should have their treatment explained to them honestly and in a way that they can understand. Giving children preparatory information to alleviate their main worries is important since not only is there a strong correlation between children's level of anxiety and the amount of pain they feel, but children receiving such information are generally more cooperative.
