A positive approach to chemotherapy: alleviating anxiety and providing reassurance can help a cancer patient take a positive approach to treatment

Article Abstract:

Breast cancer affects one in 12 women in the UK and cancer patients need a positive approach to both physical and psychological care, during treatment. A case study follows a cancer patient through diagnosis, a necessary mastectomy and the need for chemotherapy. It describes here concern about losing her hair as a side effect of the treatment and the use of the cold-cap system, which can prevent or reduce hair loss. The case study emphasizes that good communication and listening skills are needed regarding the side effects of treatment.

Blue days: with the constant fear of death for company, an isolation patient needs strong, honest words to hang on to

Article Abstract:

A patient describes her stay in hospital for a peripheral blood stem-cell transplant and how she coped with the isolation that was necessary during the high dose chemotherapy. She recounts how she was encouraged to establish a routine and how she found that cleanliness was a simple way to improve her well-being. However, she was frustrated in her attempts to make her doctors and nurses aware of non-specialist problems, and felt that the wider environment in which they worked was not seen as part of a patient's clinical experience.
