A powerful prescription

Article Abstract:

Health visitors and district nurses at Tamworth Health Centre in Staffordshire, England, are writing prescriptions for products in the Nurse Prescribers' Formulary as part of a one-year pilot project that began in Oct. 1994. Team leader Anthea Clegg explains that the project has enabled the health visitors to offer a more comprehensive service to their clients. For example, a health visitor who notices that a baby has oral thrush when carrying out a home visit can write a prescription for the appropriate medicine rather than simply advising the mother to take the baby to the general practitioner.

Workers' health undermined

Article Abstract:

Coal miners face many health hazards during their work, many related to dust particles which can cause heart, lung and skin problems. Medical inspectors were first introduced in UK mines in 1927, with over 40 nurses employed to look after the medical welfare of miners by 1948. Injuries could be treated on site, with nurses being allowed to administer morphine as a painkiller. Health inspectors have introduced measures to reduce the occurrence of heat-related illnesses, by ensuring all miners have access to supplementary food and drink which reduces low blood sugar levels.
