Intracervical fibrin sealants: a potential treatment for early preterm premature rupture of membranes

In vitro sealing of punctured fetal membranes: potential treatment for midtrimester premature rupture of membranes

Article Abstract:

A fibrin/thrombin-based sealant appears to be more effective than blood platelets in sealing a ruptured fetal membrane. This was the conclusion of researchers who stretched fetal membranes over a syringe filled with amniotic fluid, punctured the membrane, and then injected various sealants into the amniotic fluid.

A prospective, randomized comparison of Foley catheter insertion versus intracervical prostaglandin E(sub)2 gel for preinduction cervical ripening

Article Abstract:

A Foley catheter may be more effective than intracervical prostaglandin E(sub)2 for ripening the cervix during induced labor. Ripening the cervix means enlarging and softening the cervix so the baby can pass through. Researchers randomly assigned 77 pregnant women to have a Foley catheter placed into the cervix and 72 pregnant women to have a prostaglandin E(sub)2 gel suppository place in the cervix. Women who had the Foley catheter had shorter labor and lower health care costs than women who received prostaglandin E(sub)2 suppositories.
