A qualitative study of older people's perceptions of ageing and exercise: the implications for health promotion

Article Abstract:

The study, conducted in Scotland, assesses how people feel about getting older and how this changes their ideas about exercise. People defined being old as the stage of life they were at. Retired people did less physical activity and thought exercise was potentially damaging. They were unlikely to exercise for its own sake and were unaware of the definite health benefits of moderate exercise. For health messages to be effective, doctors should ensure that the strategies they promote are relevant to older people and should focus on benefits which patients can relate to.

Combining methods in health promotion research: some considerations about appropriate use

Article Abstract:

Recent research has questioned whether the use of a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods in health promotion research will necessarily produce the best results. It has been suggested that it is important to consider issues of epistemology, practical application and methodology when undertaking health promotion research. It is important that combined methods approaches take into account the contradictions involved in the production of data.

Qualitative methods in health promotion research: some criteria for quality

Article Abstract:

Ground rules are needed when carrying out qualitative research on health promotion. Marketing research approaches tend to be used in such research due to lack of expertise, but these may not be the most appropriate. More resources are needed to carry out research for a longer period in order for a sociological approach to become more common. The use of experienced researchers is desirable and this means that work should not be subcontracted.
