A reply to: 'Why doesn't the AMA do something?

Article Abstract:

Many physicians are frustrated by the perceived inaction of the American Medical Association (AMA) on issues that affect their practices. Physicians involved in the AMA, however, tend to feel that the group is doing a good job. Because the organization represents many types of physicians, it must gear its policies toward the overall good of all physicians. In addition, it must not appear to be too militant, because it has to remain a credible negotiator with policymakers. More specialized medical organizations can and should take an aggressive stance on issues concerning their constituents.

Solutions - good and bad - to reform health system

Article Abstract:

The future of the US health care system will follow one of four paths that will be dependent on the resolution of federal budget problems and obstruction from political and special-interest groups. The American Medical Association and the Democratic Party support universal health care financed by employers with the establishment of a risk pool to provide for the unemployed. Other suggestions include: continuing the present system; removing employers from the task of providing health insurance by giving consumers more choice; or establishing a national health care system.

AMA letter was a necessary step

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Assn (AMA) letter to Ira Magaziner, a top aide to Pres Clinton on healthcare reform, has improved relations between the AMA and Pres Clinton's task force on health system reform. The AMA wrote the letter in response to Magaziner's questions to the AMA about organized medicine's opinion on healthcare reform issues. The letter stated that the AMA was willing and ready to take part in the healthcare reform process. The AMA has since appeared at numerous task force work groups.
