Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the difficulties which can be faced by nurses returning to work after a career break are discussed. Returning nurses are required to complete a 15 week course, which is unpaid, before they can apply for a job in the National Health Service.

A description is presented of the experiences of a female nurse who returned to nursing after a career break. The difficulties of coping with internal shift rotation and of balancing work with family life are discussed.
