Article Abstract:

A hospital in London, England, offers one 12-bed ward for female psychiatric patients only. Mental health charity MIND believe this type of provision should be government policy. The more common arrangement of mixed-sex acute psychiatric wards often frightens women patients, who may have to deal with physical and sexual aggression despite their own vulnerable state. The women-only Mermaid Ward at Homerton Hospital, Hackney, London, has proved popular, particularly with women from ethnic minority groups, but some experts question the continuing employment of male staff.
