A sensitive topic

Article Abstract:

Sponsorship is a sensitive issue in the United Kingdom National Health Service, with some health workers arguing that it is a useful way of raising funds for educational projects, and others arguing that companies should pay into a central fund to free recipients from commercial pressures. Companies can make large sums from appliance sales promoted through sponsorship. Guidelines on sponsorship are being developed by different organisations involved in the health service, but much is left to the discretion of nurses.

Handling aids: lifting and moving patients

Article Abstract:

Many nurses are now starting to acknowledge that handling aids can play an important role in protecting patients and carers from injury. When using handling aids, it is important to ensure that the carer has been trained to use the equipment concerned. There should always be enough space to carry out the task properly, and the carer, and where appropriate the patient, should be physically able to use the equipment. All equipment must be regularly maintained, and in some cases floor covering is a key consideration.

Health visitors vote to press for retention of their title

Article Abstract:

The majority of members of the Health Visitors' Association (HVA) are in favour of pressure being put on the UKCC and the government for the retention of the title of health visitor. They believe that a change to the title 'community nurses' as part of the UKCC's plans for community nursing will confuse patients and not reflect the special abilities of health visitors. There would also be a danger of health visitors being put at a disadvantage in skill-mix reviews.
