Randomized, double-blind trial of chitosan for body weight reduction

Article Abstract:

Chitosan, a cationic polysaccharide derived from the cuticle of crustacea, does not appear to reduce body weight in overweight subjects, according to research involving the oral administration of four capsules of chitosan or an indistinguishable placebo twice daily for 28 consecutive days to 34 overweight volunteers. Chitosan produced no clinically relevant reduction of body weight compared to the placebo. No serious adverse effects of chitosan were noted.
