A study of the use of tape-recorded handovers

Article Abstract:

A pilot study at Trinity Hospice in Clapham found that using tape-recorded handovers offered several advantages over traditional staff handovers. The nurses involved in the study were enthusiastic about using taped handovers, saying that the quality of reporting had improved and reporting had become more concise, relevant, clear and organised. Taped handovers gave nurses flexibility over when to record their report, and also gave flexibility over staffing. The system also means that up to 50% more nursing time is available because not everyone has to be present to hear the report.
