A survey of condom distribution throughout general practice in Camden and Islington

Article Abstract:

Camden and Islington are boroughs in London, England, and the local health authority in these boroughs has carried out a project to distribute free condoms. They were given to family physician practices where practice nurses in turn gave them to users. Some physicians distributed condoms to certain categories of patient such as teenage males and females and patients seeking emergency contraception. Privacy was seen as important for distribution, and some practices were reluctant to advertise the availability of condoms in case patients were offended.

Smoking cessation interventions in pregnancy; practice and views of midwives, GPs and obstetricians

Article Abstract:

A survey of family physicians, obstetricians and midwives carried out in the UK in 1992 focused on their ability to tackle smoking in pregnancy. The health professionals surveyed tended to advise on the risks of smoking to pregnant women who smoked. They were less able to help the mothers stop smoking. Over half of these professionals perceived themselves as not having enough training, and there is thus a need to improve training and skill levels in this field.

Skin protection in the sun: a survey of the quality of information available in general interest magazines

Article Abstract:

A survey of UK magazines examined information provided on the health effects of exposure to the sun, comparing this to specialist medical opinion. Advice is given to readers on this issue, but certain topics are avoided, such as risks faced by those exposed to the sun in the UK, and ways in which skin cancer can be prevented. More information could be made available by health professionals to magazine publishers in order to promote awareness of this issue.
