A vaccine to prevent herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia in older adults

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to test the hypothesis that vaccination against varicellazoster virus (VZV) would decrease the incidence, severity, or both of herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia among older adults. The result showed that the zoster vaccine markedly reduced morbidity from herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia among older adults.

A new treatment for postherpetic neuralgia

Article Abstract:

Injecting corticosteroids into the spinal column may benefit some patients with post-herpetic neuralgia. However, this treatment should be reserved for patients who do not respond to other treatments. Post-herpetic neuralgia is nerve pain that follows an episode of a herpesvirus disease called shingles.
