Formation of vesicovaginal fistula: the role of suture placement into the bladder during closure of the vaginal cuff after transabdominal hysterectomy

Article Abstract:

Leakage of urine into the vagina following abdominal hysterectomy may not be caused by bladder stitches. A vesicovaginal fistula, or opening between the bladder and vagina, may develop in a small number of patients after hysterectomy. Some doctors believe that placement of sutures into the bladder may cause these leaks to form. Researchers performed hysterectomies on 32 rabbits, and deliberately sutured through the bladder in 21 animals. In the 28 days following surgery, no rabbit developed a vesicovaginal fistula. Other aspects of the surgery may relate to fistula formation.
