A working partnership

Article Abstract:

The introduction of the UK's Community Care Act has raised concerns about the effective contribution that nurses make to care in the community. In Scotland, a new initiative allows nurses to use their professional skills to assess social needs. The Currie project is a care management scheme established in Edinburgh, Scotland, which has broken the traditional barriers between social and health care work. Members of the team share information, gain new skills and are more trusting of their colleagues, resulting in patients receiving a more efficient assessment of their needs.

Healthcare evaluation: evaluating the health service

Article Abstract:

It is difficult though possible to make an evaluation of the UK National Health Service. There are various aspects of the service which can be assessed, such as accountability, equity and efficiency. The service can also be assessed from different angles, such as economic, ethical or clinical. It can also be considered at a national level, and at the level of individual professionals. There have been a number of evaluations of gynaecological care.

Encouraging patients to take part in their own care

Article Abstract:

The Patient's Charter advocates patient participation although a survey found that many patients felt they had no influence in the care they received. Patient participation can involve decision making, taking an interest in the running of the ward or performing clinical skills. Patient participation in the community and in psychiatric nursing is well established.
