AMA launches 'new focus' campaign

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association (AMA) wants to inform the public and doctors about its longstanding advocacy on behalf of patients and the medical profession. The AMA's effort will include the expenditure of millions of dollars on newspaper and magazine advertisements that will begin appearing in February 1997. AMA leaders say both the public and physicians are unaware of the association's activities. The group also wants to improve the focus of its efforts.

CMA sued in maneuverings over Calif.'s proposition 187

Article Abstract:

The California Medical Assn (CMA) is among other organizations and several cities in California that Gov Pete Wilson is suing for doubting the constitutionality of Proposition 187. The proposition was passed in 1994 and limits medical treatment to illegal aliens in California. Different organizations have filed federal lawsuits to block the measure, but Wilson and others believe that the state should interpret the scope the proposition.

Ethics forum launched: AMA council values input from doctors, patients

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Assn Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs held its first open forum in Jun 1995 on pending ethical opinions during the association's annual meeting. The forum was open to all doctors and these forums were begun to prevent changes in the council's autonomy. These forums will be held twice a year. Issues discussed at this forum were opinions that had already been decided upon by the council.
