AMA proposes new alliance in renewed tort reform push

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association (AMA) has formed the Alliance for Medical Liability Reform to lobby Congress for revision of medical tort liability laws. The AMA intends to bring health, consumer and business groups together through this alliance. Liability reform is integral to healthcare reform because it is one of the reasons for rising healthcare costs. Out of 14 pending bills on medical tort reform, the AMA has endorsed Orrin G. Hatch's proposal.

'Old Joe' wins one: tobacco makers get research for defense

Article Abstract:

R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co (RJR) has obtained, by court order, previously confidential medical research data from two scientists who investigated the effects of cigarette advertising on children. RJR's success in subpoenaing the data has upset the medical community, who feel that the threat of private correspondences and research being made public will inhibit future medical research.
