AMA weighs Medicare pay update delay

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association suggested that delays in the increase of 1994 Medicare payments might serve as an alternative to Clinton administration plans to cut most Medicare services by 2%. The president's budget would slow Medicare growth from 12.7% a year to 10.5% annually and save approximately $50 billion over a five-year period. Among the anticipated Clinton proposals that are opposed by medical professionals is a plan to reimburse radiologists, anesthesiologists and pathologists by diagnosis-related groups.

Battle looms over benefit tax caps: would they target employees or employers?

Article Abstract:

The idea of taxing employer-provided health benefits is gaining popularity, not only with Bill Clinton but also with big business and the insurance industry. The concept is tied to managed competition, under which consumers would be taxed for choosing costly health care plans. Clinton and other leading Democrats believe that tax caps would have to be accompanied by global spending limits. Critics maintain that the history of managed care plans indicates that the measure alone will not reduce federal health care costs.

Senate OKs insurance bill

Article Abstract:

The Senate passed health insurance legislation, in a bill sponsored by Nancy Landon Kassebaum and Edward M. Kennedy, by a 100-0 margin. Provisions in the legislation include preventing the exclusion of employees from receiving health coverage due to the status of their health, among others. Provisions involving mental health coverage, medical savings accounts, and malpractice reforms are still under contention and may not survive a congressional majority or White House approval.
