Abortion training mandate sparks furor

Article Abstract:

All resident physicians in obstetrics and gynecology must be offered the opportunity for training in abortion technique, according to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Institutions and physicians with religious or ethical objections may choose not to participate. The majority of abortions are performed in private clinics rather than hospitals, so residents may lack training in procedures which may be necessary for treatment of women who miscarry, for instance.

The view from Mount Koop

Article Abstract:

C. Everett Koop, the US surgeon general from 1981 to 1989, feels his former post had an important role in educating the public about health issues, and he wishes Pres Clinton would appoint someone to the position. Koop also believes the government should help the 43 million people in the US who are without health insurance. His views on medical savings accounts, HIV testing for pregnant women, partial-birth abortions and physician-assisted suicide are discussed.

Anti-abortion votes stack up in House

Article Abstract:

Committees in the House of Representatives are voting for major changes in laws governing abortions and physician training as well as for funding of abortions and fetal tissue research. The shift in position on these issues is attributed to the Republican landslide in November 1994. One issue that stands out in particular centers on a proposed law to make abortion training optional for physicians.
