Accreditor proposes tighter rein on residency programs

Article Abstract:

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has suggested changes in national accreditation standards for institutions that have residency programs. The changes would result in tighter oversight controls through internal review systems for medical schools, hospitals and other organizations involved in physician training. The new standards, which could become effective as early as Jul 1997, are being reviewed by 11,000 medical institutions.

Med school hopefuls face tough competition, keep trying

Article Abstract:

Record numbers of medical school applicants are making it tougher for applicants to get accepted, but most applicants reapply. Some 45,657 students applied for 1995 acceptance to medical schools, according to the Assn of American Medical Colleges. That number will result in an approximately 2.6-to-1 applicant-to-acceptance ratio. Increasingly, premed advisers are suggesting that students consider alternative health careers.

Hike in med school applicants may boost standards

Article Abstract:

The Association of American Medical Colleges predicts a 12.7% increase in the number of 1992 medical school applicants over 1991 figures. A 25.8% rise in female and minority applicants will account for much of the expected increase. Education leaders suggest that the 1992 figures will bring the ratio of all applicants to those that are accepted to 2-1, the level needed to ensure high, yet reasonable, academic standards.
