Acute stroke - on the threshold of a therapy?

Article Abstract:

Patients with ischemic stroke should be further assessed to determine if they will benefit from the use of plasminogen activators. Early intervention is needed to treat patients with ischemic stroke. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) studied the use of intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) on ischemic stroke patients within three hours of the onset of symptoms. The group receiving t-PA showed improved neurological outcomes compared to the placebo group, however, the risk of cerebral hemorrhage was increased. The computed tomography scan should be examined for hemispheric brain ischemia, which may increase the risk of deterioration. Factors that predispose patients to hemorrhage should be explored.

Recombinant activated factor VII for acute Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Article Abstract:

Intracerebral Hemorrhage is one of the most disabling forms of stroke and more than one third of patients with this disorder die within one month, after the onset of symptoms and only 20 % regain functional independence. Recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) is approved to treat bleeding in patients with hemophilia who have antibodies to factor VIII or IX, and it is reported to reduce bleeding in patients without coagulopathy as well.
