Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma in Northeastern Brazil: a clinical, histopathologic, and molecular study

Article Abstract:

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) appears to have different characteristics in Northeastern Brazil. This disease is caused by a virus called HTLV-I, which is a retrovirus distantly related to HIV. A study of 28 patients with ATL in Bahia, Brazil revealed significant differences between ATL in this region and the same disease in other countries. The patients were younger than those in other countries and were predominantly men. Many of the patients were of African ancestry.

HIV-1 subtypes among blood donors from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Article Abstract:

Many Brazilians are infected with strains of HIV that are not detected by some HIV tests. Researchers tested 43 units of blood donated to blood centers that tested positive on five different HIV tests. Seventy-seven percent were subtype B, 14% were subtype F and 9% appeared to be viral strains combining the characteristics of subtypes B and F or B and D. Brazil has the highest HIV infection rate in Latin America.
