Aging successfully until death in old age: opportunities for increasing active life expectancy

Article Abstract:

Living an active life without major disability may be a function of physical activity. Physically very active older people were twice as likely to die without prior disability than more sedentary people. The probability of living to age 80 years old and being not disabled prior to death was 26% for healthy 65-year old men and 18% for healthy 65-year-old women. Disability before death after a long life is therefore much subject to prevention.

Smoking, physical activity, and active life expectancy

Article Abstract:

Keeping physically active and refraining from smoking may ensure longevity. Researchers analyzed the level of physical activity among 8,604 smokers and nonsmokers at least 65 years old. Physical activity in nonsmokers added 11 to 18 years of life in men and women, wherease active smokers could expect to live 9 to 15 years longer. Higher physical activity also reduced the amount of disability before death.

Foot pain and disability in older women

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the relationship between foot pain and disability in women aged 65 years and older. Sever foot pain was more common among women who were between 65 and 74, obese, or had hand or knee osteoarthritis. The results reveal that severe foot pain may play a key role in disability for older women.
