Alcohol abuse and dependence: psychopathology, medical management and dental implications

Article Abstract:

Dentists should be familiar with the health consequences of alcoholism because many alcoholics have poor oral hygiene. Chronic alcohol consumption can also increase the risk of oral cancer, especially if the person also smokes. Dentists can successfully treat alcoholics but they must make sure they use anesthetics, painkillers, and antibiotics that do not interact with alcohol.
