All our yesterdays

Article Abstract:

Nurses working the UK in the 1950s were recognized as people who cared, according to former nurse Barbara Slade, who began training at St James' Hospital in Leeds, England, in 1950. A typical working day for a nurse at that time involved strict discipline and routine, but it was also possible for junior staff nurses to spend time talking to the patients and getting to known them as people. The main role of the nurse today is maintaining patients' safety, both emotionally and physically, and their dignity, according to nurse Ursula Smith.

Back to front: Mention backsides and most people express revulsion or laugh nervously

Article Abstract:

Other cultures have a more mature attitude to the anus than in Britain. Suppositories are a common way to administer medication in France, but they are often a taboo subject in Britain. The Great British Bottom Survey by Warner Lambert Consumer Healthcare found that piles are seen as less embarrassing than genital herpes, vaginal thrush of impotence but more embarrassing than diarrhoea, wind or bladder problems. Bowel cancer is more common than breast cancer, but the taboo on discussing anything anal gives it a low profile.
