All you need to know about ... maggots

Article Abstract:

Health professionals have been aware for many years that maggots can play a positive role in healing open wounds, but the growing use of antibiotics in the 1940s prompted a corresponding decline in the use of larval therapy to treat or prevent wound infections. However, larval therapy is now becoming more popular again as it becomes more widely accepted that antibiotics cannot play a role in wound debridement and may even delay the process if they limit the activity of non-pathogenic proteolytic bateria which would assist in degrading slough or narcotic tissue.

Complex conditions

Article Abstract:

Treating infected open wounds such as leg ulcers and complex conditions such as hidradenitis suppurativa can be extremely complicated if the patient has additional health problems. In some cases, the other health problems may make it impossible for the patient to be fully involved in the treatment of the wounds. Health professionals involved with such cases must give particular attention to preventing recurring infection, reducing self-care deficits and producing improved wound management.
