New developments in research on Alzheimer's disease are discussed in the theme issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association's March 12, 1997, issue. Female heart patients often have high LDL, despite drugs

Article Abstract:

A study of 2,743 postmenopausal women with coronary heart disease revealed that many of them suffer from "bad cholesterol", or high levels of LDL, despite the lipid-lowering drugs they may be taking to prevent such a condition. Although 47% of the participants in the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study were taking lipid-lowering drugs, only 9% were meeting the established 1993 goal for LDL-C levels.

Private group of AIDS experts work to update clinic guides

Article Abstract:

On Jan 11, 1996, top AIDS experts gathered in San Francisco, CA, to rewrite clinical guidelines of HIV care using antiretroviral therapy. They all agreed that the 1993 guidelines needed updating. Clinicians were in doubt about care and needed to know what treatments to provide now. The specialists also did not want to use the consensual approach that had been used in 1993.
