American journalism has a new arrow in its quiver

Article Abstract:

Environmental journalism in the US, which reports on actual and possible environmental hazards in the community, has become more responsible and mature. With the passage of the 'Right To Know' law of 1986, the use of the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) and the advent of computer-assisted reporting in the US, environmental reporters have come a long way in providing in-depth information to the citizenry. TRI, which is a computer data base, is especially helpful in providing continuing education for reporters, making them more responsible to their audiences.

Poll shows Americans think green

Article Abstract:

A Times-Mirror Magazines Inc survey shows that Americans are more environmentally conscious. They believe that practical solutions can be found for the country's environmental problems and feel that existing laws and policies do not adequately address environmental issues. They are unwilling to sacrifice environmental protection despite a floundering economy and believe that economic development and environmental concerns can work together.

Anticipating the environmental smorgasbord

Article Abstract:

Two pollution-control laws, the Clean Water Act and the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act, face reauthorization in 1992. Proposed amendments include the redefinition of wetlands and stricter requirements on recycling and reuse. Such controversial provisions are likely to earn the approval of Congress and might hinder an expected presidential veto. The Endangered Species Act is likewise being considered for reauthorization.
