An abundance of options

Article Abstract:

A 33-year-old rancher was diagnosed with leptospirosis. Leptospirosis is an infection with the bacterium Leptospira interrogans, which can cause prolonged fever. The patient was admitted to a hospital after developing a fever, headache, joint and muscle pain, low back pain, nausea and vomiting. Diagnosis of this patient's problem was complicated because his lifestyle included activities that could be connected to a number of diseases. These activities included intravenous drug use, contact with domestic and wild animals, drinking unpasteurized milk and eating wild game. He had also been in jail and had been treated for a recent snakebite. A bacterial infection was suspected when he developed skin lesions, and he was treated with antibiotics. A blood test after treatment started revealed that he had leptospirosis. He probably got the disease by eating or drinking something contaminated with animal urine. His condition steadily improved, and he was discharged from the hospital.

Boning up on estrogen: new options, new concerns

Article Abstract:

More options for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) could increase women's compliance with the treatment. Estrogen replacement can strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. However, cyclic administration of estrogen and progestins re-establishes menstruation, which causes many women to stop HRT. Two 1996 studies found that daily administration of estrogen and progestins can stop bone loss and even increase bone mass. The treatments also stopped monthly menstruation. One combined treatment also improved blood lipid profiles.
