Health education in schools: a survey of policy and implementation

Article Abstract:

The health education policies of more than 800 schools in England were questioned in a survey by the National Foundation for Educational Research on behalf of the Health Education Authority. In-service training was found to be poorly funded, and health education could become more marginalised, primarily due to the heavy demands of implementing the National Curriculum. Some of the schools were updating or developing health education policies, with 50-66% already having written policies. A lot of schools went beyond the curriculum requirements.

School sex education: more a patchwork than a pattern

Article Abstract:

The lack of a national policy for sex education in UK schools leaves the subject open to abuse and confusion. A report, 'An Enquiry into Sex Education' published by the Sex Education Forum, reveals that local education authorities find it difficult to provide figures for sex education policies in their schools. Two problems which particularly stand out are those associated with finding time for sex education in the school curriculum and the teachers' lack of training.
