Rubella Outbreak--Westchester County, New York, 1997-1998

Article Abstract:

An outbreak of rubella in Westchester County, New York was traced to a group of young Hispanic adults who were born in countries where national rubella vaccination programs did not exist or were implemented recently. Rubella is the medical term for German measles. Since a rubella vaccine was introduced in 1969, the incidence of this disease has decreased substantially. Between December 1997 and May 1998, 95 cases of rubella occurred in Westchester County. This was almost one-third of the total number of cases nationwide during that time. Eighty-eight (93%) patients were foreign born and none had received the rubella vaccine.
