Prognostic significance of HER-2/neu expression in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer: a multivariate analysis

Article Abstract:

Overexpression of the gene HER-2/neu does not appear to be related to the outcome of advanced ovarian cancer. The function of HER-2/neu is still unknown although it may act as a receptor for a growth factor. Over-expression of HER-2/neu has been previously reported in cases of breast, ovarian, salivary gland, stomach and colon cancers. Tissue samples from the tumors of 105 women with ovarian cancer were analyzed. Twenty-five samples had significant HER-2/neu expression, 26 showed no expression and the rest showed weak expression. All of the patients underwent chemotherapy and at follow-up, 64 patients died of ovarian cancer, 20 still had cancer and 21 showed no signs of cancer. There was no significant association between HER-2/neu over-expression in the tissue sample and survival.

Adenovirus-mediated gene therapy of ovarian cancer in a mouse model

Article Abstract:

An adenovirus with the herpes simplex virus gene may be used to infect ovarian cancer cells to inhibit or even stop their reproduction. Researchers studied the effect of an adenovirus with the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase gene followed by ganciclovir treatment on laboratory samples of human ovarian cancer cells and on immunodeficient mice injected with human ovarian cancer cells. Ovarian cancers exposed to the adenovirus were more susceptible to treatment with ganciclovir. Mice treated with adenovirus and ganciclovir had lower tumor burdens and no abdominal tumors.
