Antepartum seafood consumption and mercury levels in newborn cord blood

Article Abstract:

A study to determine the level of fetal mercury exposure by measuring mercury levels in newborn cord blood and to analyze the association with fish consumption during pregnancy is illustrated. The standard of care requires physicians to recommend a dietary restriction of fish and seafood consumption to all pregnant patients and these recommendations stem from previous research that proves a positive correlation between maternal seafood consumption and neurotoxicity in exposed fetuses.
