Sexual transmission of hepatitis B in Mwanza, Tanzania

Article Abstract:

It appears that heightening the current efforts aimed at controlling sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in East Africa may also be beneficial in controlling the small percentage of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections apparently transmitted sexually. Blood samples from three populations in Tanzania including 253 high school students, 952 blood donors for relatives undergoing transfusions, and 1,025 patients with STDs were tested for HBV and other STDs. Seven percent of the HBV infections found in males and 3.0% of those found in females were determined to have been acquired sexually.

Increasing barrier method use among oral contraceptive users at risk of STDs: what approach is best?

Article Abstract:

Offering women who take oral contraceptives a choice of barrier contraceptives may increase the chance that they will use the barrier methods. Oral contraceptives are effective in preventing pregnancy but only a condom can protect women from contracting a sexually transmitted disease. Researchers randomly assigned 167 oral contraceptive users to use a condom or a condom plus nonoxynol-9. Women who received both were consistently more likely to use both as well as to use a condom alone. Thus giving them a choice increased the use of barrier methods without decreasing condom use.
