Antibiotic prophylaxis for dental patients with total joint replacements

Article Abstract:

Dental patients with total joint replacement probably don't need to take antibiotics before dental procedures. The risk/benefit ratio should be considered in prescribing antibiotics. Possibility of bacterial resistance to antibiotics, toxicity, and allergic reaction are all potential risks. High-risk patients include the immunocompromised, hemophiliacs, insulin-dependent diabetics, and those with a history of prosthetic joint infections.

A comparison of dental services received by Medicaid and privately insured adult populations

Article Abstract:

A study of dental services received by Medicaid and privately insured adult populations is conducted in order to compare the demographic characteristics and the use of dental services for enrollees in the Iowa Medicaid program and in the Delta Dental Plan in Iowa. The overall use of dental services, with an emphasis on the use of tertiary care services such as endodontic therapy and tooth extraction services is focused.

Antibiotic prophylaxis for dental patients with total joint replacements

Article Abstract:

Most people who have had a joint replaced do not need to take an antibiotic before receiving dental care. However, some of these patients may want to take antibiotics before a dental procedure if they have risk factors for joint infection. Dental procedures sometimes cause bacteria in the mouth to be released into the bloodstream. These bacteria can then infect both natural and artificial joints.
