Appeals court: not illegal monopoly at Marshfield Clinic: physicians savor victory as antitrust charges dropped

Article Abstract:

The Marshfield Clinic has won an appeal in a case in which it was accused by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Wisconsin of monopolistic practices. The decision annuled a $17 million penalty for the Clinic and forced the Blues to pay the Clinic's court costs for the appeal. The Clinic employs or contracts 90% of the doctors in nine of the 14 area counties, but only insures about 50% of the local market. The court decided that the dearth of health care in the area gave the clinic its influence in the area, not monopolistic practices.

PPO leaders say their industry will hold up against HMOs

Article Abstract:

Industry officials predicted that preferred provider organizations (PPOs) will survive the competitive challenge posed by health maintenance organizations (HMOs). At the 1992 American Assn of Preferred Provider Organizations meeting, participants asserted that PPOs will persist even if they serve only as vehicles of transition to HMOs. The number of employers offering PPOs did not increase in 1991 or 1992; however, 7% of 2,409 employers surveyed said they intended to offer a PPO in 1992 or 1993.
