Assessing a murmur, saving a life: current trends in the management of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Article Abstract:

Several available interventions have shown promise in identifying and treating patients with an inherited heart disorder called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Treatments include dual-chamber pacemakers, calcium or beta channel blocker medication, or surgical correction. It is often difficult to identify patients with HCM. However, research has shown echocardiography to be an accurate screening test among patients suspected of having HCM. Many patients with HCM die without any previous indications of disease.

A cardiac murmur in a neonate

Article Abstract:

A case involving heart murmur in a five-day-old African American female indicates the need to be aware of possible congenital heart disease, especially given the trend toward early discharge of newborns. Some 60% of all newborns exhibit heart murmur in the first two days after birth, but most are benign. In the present case, pulse oximetry was crucial to the eventual diagnosis of tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia. Criteria indicating the need for a cardiology consultation are discussed.

Assessing the Harm of Silicone Gel-filled Breast Implants

Article Abstract:

Evaluations of breast implants show that sufficient evidence exists linking the implants to immune disorders. Silicone gel-filled implants provoke an immune response, triggering a variety of disorders consistent in diverse population samples and geographic locations. Animal in vitro and in vivo testing also indicates silicone is immunogenic, causing illnesses in test subjects.
