Assessing clinical performance: where do we stand and what might we expect?

Article Abstract:

Physician competence recently has begun to be measured by using tests that focus on performance. This trend is expected to continue as medical boards and faculty rely on evaluation of everyday clinical practice exercises to assess competency. Medical testing has evolved from essay and multiple-choice questions to simulated clinical situations in which the physician is asked to demonstrate his or her knowledge. Technology is assisting enormously in the creation of complex, effective simulations. In the managed care environment of the near future, performance-based measurement will remain important. Physicians will be challenged by an environment of continuous assessment, and therefore a continuous need for self-education.

Frequency of Vaccine-Related and Therapeutic Injections-- Romania, 1998

Article Abstract:

Many Romanians are receiving inappropriate injections. Unless proper infection control procedures are followed, this puts them at risk of blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis B and C, and HIV infection. In a 1998 survey of 3,676 Romanians, 10% had received a vaccine injection and 36% had received a therapeutic injection. Many believed that an injection was more effective than medication by another route. Doctors may also prefer injections because they can document that the patient received the treatment instead of relying on patient compliance.
