Association between serum fructosamine and mortality in elderly women

Article Abstract:

Researchers in this study investigated whether fructosamine levels are associated with mortality in a population of 9,704 white women aged 65 or older. Randomly selected controls were compared with a sample of women who had died during a six-year follow-up. Fructosamine assays were performed blinded to vital status. Hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals were adjusted for such factors as age, smoking, hypertension, clinical center, and serum albumin and cholesterol levels. Elevated fructosamine levels were found to be associated with increased rate of cardiovascular mortality.

Serum dioxin and cancer in veterans of Operation Ranch Hand

Article Abstract:

Exposure to dioxin during Vietnam military duty may not increase the risk of cancer. Reseachers concluded that Air Force veterans involved in spraying herbicides in Vietnam were not at risk for specific or any forms of cancer other than the skin 20 years after active duty. The pattern of cancer progression in the group studied was inconsistent with past military exposure to dioxin.
