Automobile crash simulation with the first pregnant crash test dummy

Article Abstract:

An automobile crash dummy with a pregnancy insert may provide information about optimal fetal safety. Researchers simulated a 28 week fetus, included instrumentation to record energy transmission, attached it to a female crash dummy, and ran 39 crash tests under six different restraint systems at speeds ranging from 10 to 25 miles per hour. Air bag deployment while unbelted or when the abdomen lay near the air bag posed fetal risk. The safest seat belt arrangement was a lap belt under the abdomen and shoulder belt off to the side of the uterus and between the breasts.

Preliminary report on the treatment of endometriosis with low-dose mifepristone (RU 486)

Article Abstract:

Low-dose mifepristone (RU 486) seems to lessen symptoms of endometriosis but does not cure the condition. Endometriosis occurs when parts of the lining of the uterus occur outside the uterus and bleed regularly during the menstrual cycle. This causes pain and other symptoms. Seven women who took 5 milligrams of mifepristone daily reported a reduction in symptoms but laparoscopy did not detect any physical change in the condition. Consequently, women should take 50 to 100 milligrams daily even though this could increase the risk of side effects.

A comprehensive program to improve safety for pregnant women and fetuses in motor vehicle crashes: a preliminary report
