Article Abstract:

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are characterized by loss and dysfunction of beta cells and although the success rate of islet-cell transplantation has increased, islet shortage remains a major limitation. The only viable approach to beta-cell replacement involve stimulation of beta-cell replication or generation of beta cells from embryonic stem cells.
