Pharmacogenetic applications of the human genome project

Article Abstract:

Issues related to the genetic factors that may affect whether patients respond favorably or do not respond to pharmaceuticals are examined, focusing on how the human genome project may affect research work in pharmacogenetics. Topics include scientific approaches to identifying drug responsiveness, polymorphism, and considerations for genetic variability among different ethnic groups.

Beta(sub)1-adrenergic receptor polymorphisms confer differential function and predisposition to heart failure

Article Abstract:

Research shows that the variant Arg389 residue of the beta(sub)1-adrenergic receptor predisposes to heart failure in humans by evoking hyperactive signaling reactions that lead to depressed receptor coupling and ventricular dysfunction.

Long-distance affair with adrenal GRK2 hangs up heart failure

Article Abstract:

The researchers have found that the modulation of events regulated by [alpha]2-adrenergic receptors have counteracted heart failure by restoring proper G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling from the adrenal gland to the heart. The altered relationship between the heart and the adrenal gland that has occurred during heart failure is found to be amenable to therapy aimed at adrenal gland G-protein coupled receptor kinase 2.
