Beyond the stages of sleep: an emerging nursing model of sleep phases

Article Abstract:

Interviews of 16 women hospitalized after a heart attack revealed that women fell asleep most easily when they were allowed to go to sleep when ready. Night-time hospital-induced awakenings from noise or procedures seriously interfered with sleep. Early morning arousals often ended in the inability to return to sleep. Some women feared they might die in their sleep. Nurses could do much to help patients sleep better by responding to patient cues, minimizing night-time disturbance, and counselling.

Neonatal sleep patterns: implications for nursing

Article Abstract:

Nurses can use knowledge of neonatal sleep patterns to optimize sleep patterns during the postpartum stay and guide parents. The normal newborn has a 40- to 50-minute sleep cycle and rouses after one or two cycles. Fetal sleep/wake patterns predict newborn sleep/wake patterns. Dim lighting, quiet, and sleeping with the mother improve sleep quality. Sleeping supine or sidelying reduces the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome. Over half of 2-month-old babies still wake during the night.

SUPPORT Revisited: The Nurse Clinician's Perspective

Article Abstract:

Providing necessary care is important for patients nearing the end of their life. But the perception that patients experience needless hospitalizations and expensive interventions is prevalent. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has funded SUPPORT, the Study to Understand Prognoses and Preferences for Outcomes and Risks of Treatments, to elucidate such issues. The study's hypothesis was that increased understanding of prognoses would result in earlier treatment decisions.
