Foods of the future: the new biotechnology and FDA regulation

Article Abstract:

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced its new policy on genetically-altered foods in May 1992. Genetically altered food includes different types of plant crops produced using genetic engineering techniques. Genetic principles have been used to improve crop plants since the early 1900s. The development of molecular biology techniques has made further improvements possible. The goal of the FDA is to monitor the development of genetically-altered foods and to protect the public. The FDA tests foods produced from new varieties of crops to evaluate their safety. Genetically-engineered foods may contain substances that were not present in the original food. Some of these substances may cause an allergic reaction in consumers. Certain food products may require a higher level of review than others. The use of genetically-engineered plants should be specified on the labels of genetically-altered foods.
