Blood money

Article Abstract:

Experts at the UK's National Blood Authority believe that polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing will eventually be used to test donor blood for HIV infection, despite its minimal cost effectiveness. Donor blood is currently tested for HIV antibodies, but a case of HIV infection through blood transfusion was notified in 1997. This blood had been donated soon after infection, before the donor's body produced antibodies. PCR testing would reduce this risk, as it tests for viral material, but the costs would be very much higher, and the estimated risk in the current system is 1 in 2.5 million.
