Breast cancer racial gap examined: no easy answers to explain disparities in survival

Article Abstract:

Some doctors are beginning to think that biological differences may be the reason black women with breast cancer have higher mortality rates than white women with breast cancer. Previously, doctors thought black women were diagnosed too late or did not receive the same treatments as white women. But a study found that even when all women receive the same treatments, black women still have a worse prognosis.

Mixed Message on Prescription Drug Abuse

Article Abstract:

Some doctors believe more Americans are becoming addicted to prescription drugs but a study shows that only about 6% of the patients who take painkillers become addicted to them. This is the same percentage of people who become addicted to heroin, cocaine, and other illicit drugs of abuse. Most doctors agree that chronic pain is undertreated, particularly cancer pain.

What's the Connection? No Easy Answers for People With Eating Disorders and Drug Abuse

Article Abstract:

About one-fifth of people with an eating disorder also use illicit drugs. Abnormally low levels of dopamine receptors seem to be involved in both disorders and the reward system in the brain also plays a part. It may be easier to treat the drug abuse since the only effective treatments for the eating disorder are behavioral.
