Breast-feeding support in a neonatal surgical unit

Article Abstract:

Mothers whose babies are being cared for in a neonatal surgical unit can often encounter difficulties with breast-feeding. Research undertaken at the Yorkhill NHS Trust in Glasgow, Scotland, indicates that mothers generally receive a reasonable level of help and support from unit staff. However, some mothers feel that staff are too busy to provide sufficient support, and others find the environment rather stressful. Unit staff are clearly the main source of help, so need to be fully trained to communicate effectively. A breast-feeding support midwife can also play a valuable role.

Can HIV be transmitted through breast milk?

Article Abstract:

It is believed that over 3 million women throughout the world are infected with the HIV virus, most of whom are of child-bearing age. Most HIV transmission from mothers to babies appears to occur in the uterus, but HIV has been found in breast milk, which could be a transmissive agent. The role of the midwife in advising HIV-infected mothers about the benefits and risks of breast-feeding their babies is discussed.

Breast-feeding: breast care

Article Abstract:

Studies show that breast-feeding, although supported by most mothers, can be difficult for some, whose problems include poor milk supply, lack of nursing support and breast problems. It is important that such women are offered effective ways to prevent breast problems and preparation should begin in early pregnancy. It is essential that mothers feel relaxed and comfortable for successful breast feeding.
