Brief report: melatonin-related hypogonadotropic hypogonadism

Article Abstract:

A young man was diagnosed with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism caused by increased secretion of melatonin, a hormone secreted by the pineal gland that suppresses the activity of the testis or ovaries. Hypogonadism is decreased activity of the gonads characterized by decreased production of eggs or sperm and decreased secretion of sex hormones. The patient first consulted a physician for treatment of delayed puberty at the age of 21 years. X-rays and a computed tomographic (CT) scan of his skull revealed enlargement of his pineal gland with extensive calcification. He was treated for several years with different sex hormones, but his sperm count remained low with poor motility. Approximately six years after first seeking treatment, a blood test revealed elevated blood levels of melatonin. His blood levels of melatonin gradually decreased over the next several years for unknown reasons, and his sperm count increased.

Melatonin in humans

Article Abstract:

Recent research has shown that human melatonin can influence sleep and ovarian patterns. Melatonin is a hormone produced in the pineal gland in the brain and its normal production closely corresponds to regular sleep and wake cycles. Melatonin treatment can lengthen and improve the quality of sleep and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. Women with high levels of melatonin may experience altered menstrual cycles. There is no solid evidence to support the use of melatonin to alter the aging process, treat cancer, or affect sexual development.

Hypogonadism in a patient with a mutation in the luteinizing hormone beta-subunit gene

Article Abstract:

A 30-year-old man with delayed puberty and infertility was found to have hypogonadism associated with an absence of circulating luteinizing hormone. The important physiological role that luteinizing hormone plays in male sexual maturation and fertility is discussed.
