'Bringing beauty and brightness to the back streets': health education and public health in England and Wales, 1890-1940

Article Abstract:

An study of health education in the UK in the years between 1890 and 1940 reveals a range of trends and influences. Concepts of morality, citizenship and state responsibilities influenced health education. There were campaigns against specific diseases, including venereal disease and tuberculosis, and there were campaigns to promote cleanliness and fitness. The School Medical Service, milk depots, health visitors and the new dispensaries promoted health education, and the Central Council for Health Education, inaugurated in 1927, published a popular health education journal.

PRIVIES, SPIDERS, WORMS, AND WEEDS

Article Abstract:

Early Hebrews and the Roman empire recognized the need for waste management. However, Britain remained content for 3 centuries to dispose waste on streets and rivers. With the invention of flush toilet and awareness of worms as a public health hazard, much was accomplished in studying diseases associated to human waste and in erecting better sanitation systems.
