Bronchiolitis-Associated Hospitalizations Among US Children, 1980-1996

Article Abstract:

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is responsible for many cases of bronchiolitis in children, many of whom are hospitalized. Bronchiolitis is a lung disease. Between 1980 and 1996, about 1.65 million young children were hospitalized for bronchiolitis. Admission rates for bronchiolitis more than doubled during this time, from 12.9 per 1,000 children to 31.2 per 1,000. Between 50,000 to 80,000 hospitalizations each year among children less than one year old were due to bronchiolitis caused by RSV.

Effect of a clinical pathway to reduce hospitalizations in nursing home residents with pneumonia

Article Abstract:

A study aims to assess whether using a clinical pathway for on-site treatment of pneumonia and other lower respiratory tract infections in nursing homes could reduce hospital admissions, related complications, and costs. Results show that the line of treatment can result in comparable clinical outcomes, while reducing hospitalizations and health care costs.

Trends in hospitalizations for pneumonia among persons aged 65 years or older in the United States, 1988-2002

Article Abstract:

Trends in hospitalizations for pneumonia among persons aged 65 years or older are examined and characteristics, outcomes, and comorbid diagnoses are compared. Results suggest that hospitalization rates for pneumonia have increased among the US adults aged 64 to 74 years and aged 75 to 84 years since 1990.
